As we continue to dream, the clearer our dreams become. Christian Wijnants’ Pre-Fall 2021 collection is a continuation of his dreaming, reminiscing on his childhood memories, allowing them to become more vivid in his mind and clearer in his designs. Embracing the contrasting feelings nostalgia can bring.
The sharp, retro patterns, seen in the splash and textured floral jacquard knits, offer a strong contrast from the more faded prints seen throughout Spring/Summer. The jewel-toned floral and plaid dresses feel romantic at first before they are paired with a coated trench or latex underpinnings, adding a bit more edge. The knitwear is reimagined through the use of the Mouline knit technique, created by combining two different colors, and used to tell a story about layering. The color palette continues to explore the disparity of remembrance, through the use of pink, lilac, blue and green patterns again paired with darker hues, such as burgundy and black.
The collection was shot at Westrand, a cultural center that plays an important role on the western edge of Brussels. The center was inspired by Brutalism, a style that emerged in the 1950s and is characterized by an expressive language of forms and the use of rough-finished elements. The large-scale use of poured concrete to create a monolithic appearance acts as the perfect backdrop for the collection, finding the balance between nature and man-made, also seen through the natural and synthetic textiles used, from silk to coated cotton.
The Pre-Fall 2021 collection also introduces a new collection for the brand, ESSENTIALS. This knitwear will continue beyond the seasonal collections, supplying the brand’s innovative and high-quality knits throughout the year. As buyers and consumers alike continue to buy items from afar, the selection of knits ensures the offering of familiar pieces. The collection will continue to explore iconic roundknits, a seamless knit made on a whole-garment knitting machine, creating a refined, almost architectural piece. The ESSENTIALS also includes a variety of shapes from a turtleneck and round-neck to a t-shirt and dress made of alpaca, cotton, and merino wool.
